Sigi Schmid and the Curse of the Columbus Crew – Crew at Sounders

23 05 2012

Is there a Sigi Schmid curse over the Columbus Crew?  Does Drew Carey conjure “Ohio” spells every time the two clubs meet?

Sneaking back over the border from Vancouver with a thrilling, but fortunate 2-2 draw last Saturday. The Sounders will try to pick up their first win from the last 3 matches. Facing the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, 7pm at Century Link.

The Seattle Sounders took Sigi Schmid from the Columbus Crew in 2009 to help form the clubs inaugural squad. Sounders FC have not given anything to Columbus in return. In fact, the Sounders have selfishly continued to take points from the Crew whenever both clubs meet.

Saturday, August 27th, 2011. Sounders crus Crew 6-2. Lamar Neagle earns first career hat-trick. Second ever for Sounders. Photo by Ryan Sales

The Sounders and Crew have met competitively seven times.  Six regular season matches. Where Sounders are 3-W, 0-L, 3-D.  The other competitive match was a Sounders 2-1 win in the 2010 US Open Cup. Their second in a row at the time. Seattle has gone on to win three consecutive US Open Cups. Additionally, the Sounders have accumulated 16 goals. Their highest tally against any MLS opponent. While only allowing Columbus 6 goals.

Sigi Schmid helped manage the Columbus Crew to a 2008 MLS Cup Championship. With Seattle joining Major League Soccer the following season, the Sounders wanted a top-tier MLS coach to join the club. One who knew the ins-and-outs of the MLS game, and its players. A manager who came with proven success. No manager stood out more than Sigi Schmid. The Sounders put their sites on their man. Went for him. And got hin.

Crew fans weren’t happy with losing their coach. They haven’t been rewarded for their sacrifice. When both clubs meet, the best the Crew have been able to do is earn a draw.

On their first trip to Seattle in 2009, both clubs drew 1-1. Bad fortune met Columbus when they met in their second and final match of the 2009 season series. The Sounders were leading 1-nil on a Roger Levesque goal in the 36th minute. Levesque’s first MLS goal. Seattle gave up a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Reigning MVP, Guillermo Barros Schelotto stepped up for a sure equalizer. Prior to the spot-kick, Tyrone Marshall deployed a little orchestrated gamesmanship. While the referee was organizing players to prepare for the penalty kick, Seattle’s sly veteran defenseman nonchalantly kicked away the turf where the penalty spot was located. Schelotto had to adjust the location of the ball. Enough of an adjustment off the spot, that it sent the ball wide of the goal. Either that, or Tyrone simply administered the Sigi curse into Crew Stadium pitch.

In 2010, Sounders Blaise Nkufo dealt the Crew a stinging hat-trick in a brutal 4-nil home loss to the Sounders. Only somewhat understandable considering Nkufo had just played for the 2010 Swiss National Team in the World Cup. Along with a historic career at FC Twente. But nothing prepared the Crew for Saturday, August 27th, 2011. A sunny summer afternoon in Seattle. Perfect for soccer. Unless you’re cursed. Lamar Neagle scored in only the 4th minute of the match. He went on to collect two more for the Sounders second hat-trick. Both against the Crew. While the club went on to tally 6 goals, and conceding only two. The Sounders most deviating thrashing of an opponent to date.

Coming in to Wednesday’s match the Crew have played 10 matches. Earning 12 points on the season from a 3-W, 4-L, 3-D record. Seattle has played 11 matches. Turning 23 points from a successful 7-W, 2-L, 2-D record.

There is no such “sure thing” in soccer. The sport is far from having it. The closest you can get perhaps to a soccer sure thing is the Seattle Sounders FC’s dominance over Columbus Crew. I’d never say bet your house on it, but I’d recommend placing fair money on Seattle to walk away midweek winners. If for no reason, than I completely believe in Sigi’s curse over the Crew.

Can the Sounders win EVERYTHING? – Columbus Crew vs Seattle Sounders FC

27 08 2011

Seattle Sounders FC host Columbus Crew tomorrow on the X-Box pitch at CenturyLink Field, at 1:00 pm (PST)

* Be sure to take the Poll at the bottom of this post.  Add your comments about how you feel the Sounders will finish this year and what, if any hardware they will add to their trophy case.

Columbus Crew - 2008 MLS Cup Champions

Columbus Crew leading the Eastern Conference and Seattle Sounders FC second in the Western Conference? Considering most people picked talent heavy, New York Red Bulls as clear Eastern Conference champions, along with Steve Zakuani’s broken leg occurring early in Seattle’s season, most thoughts of Columbus and Seattle being significant playoff contenders seemed highly unlikely.

Here we are, eight matches to go and arguably the two hottest MLS teams square off in one of this weekends more compelling matches with significant playoff positioning at stake.

Last Saturday, Columbus defeated Philadelphia 2-1 at Crew Stadium to go four points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference. The same day, Seattle traveled to 106-degree Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas and defeated FC Dallas for sole possession of second place in the Western Conference. It was Seattle’s first win in Texas.

Seattle scores and Columbus defends. At 36 goals, Seattle is among the top five MLS clubs in scoring. A remarkable turnaround from an early season lack of goals. Defensively, Columbus is tied for third in the league at 24 for fewest goals allowed. That said, both clubs are well-balanced at both ends.  Columbus has excellent attacking forwards, like US International, Robbie Rogers, Emilio Renteria, and Andres Mendoza. Seattle’s defense went through a July stretch of letting in a few more goals than Keller prefers. In their last three matches, Seattle has only allowed one goal and recorded two shutouts.

Since Sigi Schmid left Columbus in 2008 the Crew have yet to defeat the Sounders. Sigi won the 2008 MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew. Sounders FC lured him to Seattle for their inaugural 2009 season. In this, his third season, he was awarded a four-year contract extension through the 2015 season. In MLS regular season play the Crew’s record against Seattle is 0-wins, 2-losses, and 3-draws.  They also lost to Seattle last year in the US Open Cup final.

US Open Cup - Sounders FC 2009, 2010 Champions

Last season featured two significant matches that give the Crew strong desire for pay-back. The first, in September, a 4-nil drubbing in Columbus. Including Sounders FC’s first hat-trick from Blaise Nkufo. The second was a 2-1 US Open Cup final loss at Qwest Field. Seattle’s second consecutive US Open Cup title.

Columbus wants to change the trend.  Both Seattle’s regular season wins were in Columbus. While both the Crew’s trips to Seattle ended in 1-1 draws.

What three points would do.  A win and the Crew would likely put insurmountable distance over Eastern Conference favorites New York Red Bulls.  Significant, since the Red Bulls were preseason favorites to win the Eastern Conference, and the MLS Cup.  With a Seattle win, the Sounders would march three points closer to LA, for top spot in the Western Conference.  Further securing their second place spot.  Seattle trails LA by six points for the top spot in MLS.

Enjoying the possibilities.  When I started this site, it was to follow the Sounders rise through Major League Soccer to become one of the world’s most successful soccer clubs.  The Sounders are making greater strides towards that goal in their third season than I imagined.  This coming Tuesday, August 30th, they face FC Dallas in a US Open Cup semi-final.  A win sends Sounders FC to a third consecutive final.  In regular season MLS standings, Seattle sits second in the league.  Meaning playoff positioning is more favorable than the first two seasons.  It also means they trail LA by six points for the Supporters Shield.  The Supporters Shield goes to the MLS club with the highest points total at the end of the season.  (win = 3 pts, draw = 1 pt)  It would be a surprise to pass LA, but the possibility is real. After two CONCACAF matches the Sounders have already doubled their effort from last year. They now lead their Champions League Group D with 2-wins (6 points).  The top top teams from each group goes to the CONCACAF Quarter-Finals.  (4 Groups with 4 teams in each)

Nothing accomplished. No victory celebrations to report, yet. The Sounders are one of only two teams in Major League Soccer competing as legitimate contenders in three competitions.  MLS, US Open Cup, and CONCACAF.  The other team is FC Dallas. Matches like this one against the Columbus Crew show how competitive the Sounders have become.  Every match feels like it’s 106-degrees in Frisco, Texas. The intensity from heated pressure of each match also brings cool fresh hope.  The blue sky is the limit for the Rave Green.  I have no idea how many chances I will have to ask this question with hopeful pride.  So here goes.  Is this the year Sounders win Everything?

US Open Cup Quarterfinal – LA Galaxy at Sounders FC – Bruce Arena, no excuses for Revenge

13 07 2011
Seattle Sketcher, Gabi Campanario

Sales on Sounders by Gabi Campanario - 8/5/09 @ Barca Friendly

Sometimes when your team is in form, like the Sounders current eight game undefeated streak, it seems like everything in the world of soccer is about your team.  As the Women’s World Cup heats up, so does the US Open Cup.  As the Women pursue a third World Cup title.  The Sounders pursue a third consecutive US Open Cup.  Can both succeed?  If everything in the world of soccer is Sounders, then the answer is absolutely!

First, there was Sunday, July 10th when the US Women’s National Team came back to defeat Brazil in penalty kicks.  Immediately after, Sounders FC came back to defeat the Timbers.  Coincidentally, on a penalty kick.

Then today, Wednesday, July 13th the US Women’s National Team defeat France 3-1 in the World Cup Semifinals and move one step away from hoisting their third Women’s World Cup trophy.

Tonight, across the Atlantic, on s small field in Tukwilla, Washington, Sounders FC play their Quarter-Final US Open Cup match against the LA Galaxy.  A rematch of last years 2-nil Sounders win.  A win earns a trip to the Semifinal vs FC Dallas for a chance to hoist a third consecutive US Open Cup.

Maybe the great play of the US Women in Germany will send soccer waves all the way to the Sounders in Seattle?  Maybe it’s coincidence?  You decide.

US Open Cup - Sounders FC Defending '09 & '10 Champions

Some Major League Soccer teams question the value of the US Open Cup.  Seattle Sounders FC make it a priority. The Cup winner gains the opportunity to play in the CONCACAF Champions League.  A tournament gaining international recognition.  LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls are two teams that have questioned the value of US Open Cup.  Chicago, Columbus, and FC Dallas join Seattle in taking the US Open Cup seriously.  Scheduling and lineup choices are challenges, but what league around the world doesn’t face those same challenges in important tournaments other than their league?  The weak effort and hasty excuses from some MLS squads are showing leaks.

Tonight pits Major League Soccer’s league leading, and star-powered LA Galaxy against two-time defending US Open Cup Champion, Seattle Sounders FC.  Both clubs have high stake reasons to win.  No excuses.

No excuses for watered down lineups.  LA Galaxy play a Saturday friendly against Real Madrid.  While Sounders FC play an intense weekend regular season match against Major League Soccer defending Champion, Colorado Rapids at home.  Sounders coach, Sigi Schnid has the tougher schedule, but will play to pursue a third consecutive US Open Cup title.

Bruce Arena and LA have dominated Seattle with 5-wins and 1-draw in MLS regular season and playoff competition the last two years.  His only loss to rival coach, Sigi Schmid and the Sounders came last July in the US Open Cup.  Bruce Arena will be seeking revenge for the 2-nil loss.  He has no excuses for doing anything other than fielding a high-powered revenge seeking lineup.  Sigi Schmid has the tougher job of navigating lineup decisions to have players healthy and ready for both matches.

“. . . to me these games don’t make sense”.
“Essentially, it was a reserve game tonight.  I think the timing of this competition isn’t right for MLS teams”.
” . . . the competition is watered down due to the fact that each team is juggling players”.

Bruce Arena’s comments, July 2010 after losing 2-nil to Sounders in a US Open Cup Semifinal.

Bruce Arena also made comments about the Starfire field and facility.  He may have a point in questioning the Sounder’s Front Office insistence in using the small practice pitch, but he won’t have to worry about lineup juggling or MLS scheduling.  The only watered down issue he may have to deal with is his teams preparation for the short, fast, Northwest pitch.

Sigi’s Sounders go to Washington

4 05 2011

April 30, 2011 #11 Tribute to Steve Zakuani

The Sounders paid an emotional and heart-felt tribute to Steve Zakuani in last Saturday’s match with Toronto FC.  The 11th minute tribute for Zakuani’s broken leg received in their previous match by Colorado Rapids, Brian Mullan, was a salute to Zakuani’s #11 kit number (jersey number).  The Sounders valuable #11 left winger was missing from the Sounders *starting XI (starting lineup).  Zakuani is beginning the long and hopeful road to recovery.  The tribute was topped off in the most perfect manner possible.  A 3-nil victory. Offensive and exciting for fans with a clean sheet (no goals allowed) for Sounders Keeper, Kasey Keller.

For the Sounders offensive and team spirit the victory meant everything.  It combined an emotional show for their fallen teammate and for 36,000 of the most exciting fans in US Soccer.  The first goal came from eventual “man of the match”, Brad Evans.  A cross that bulls-eyed ”Flaco’s” (Alvaro Fernandez) forehead and found the back of net.  Adding to his assist in the first half, Brad Evans scored a brace (two goals) in the second half.  Monro slotted a perfectly weighted ball inside and to the right of Toronto’s goal.  Evans perfectly timed his run up on the ball for a one time strike curling past keeper and into the left corner of Toronto’s goal.  His second, a penalty kick.

For most soccer clubs in the world there is nothing that needs to follow that last sentence.  Not in Seattle.  Never normal and always a story.  Penalty kicks are often considered “given” goals.  Not at Qwest field.  Until Saturday, no Sounder had ever scored a home pitch penalty kick.  In tribute to Zakuani and everything that is remotely normal in the world of soccer, Evans scored the Sounders first ever home pitch penalty kick.  It was also Evans first professional brace (two goals).

With the #11 Zakuani tribute successfully put behind them, Sounders quickly turn to a midweek match vs DC United in our Nation’s Capital.     The brief, and successful one match home stay is sandwiched between four road games.  With Philadelphia’s draw and Colorado’s victory behind them, the next two challenges come up quickly.  First is midweek opponent DC United, then another short turnaround to face Columbus on Saturday.  Little rest and a growing injury report makes both matches part of a daunting road trip.  Already including Steve Zakuani, Seattle’s injury report boasts forwards O’Brian White and Mauro Rosales.  Nothing comes easy for Sounders.

DC United - Black and Red - MLS Champions '96, '97, '99, '04

Seattle has never lost in our Nation’s Capital.  It has become the most successful road stop for Sounders FC since joining MLS in 2009.  The Sounders faced DC United at RFK Stadium in the 2009 US Open Cup final winning its first trophy 2-1.  A week later, they surprised everyone by coming back for a regular season match and winning again.  Last year, Roger Levesque scored a late match winner on a short cross from Montero.  The win was part of the Sounders late in form run which launched them into the 2010 MLS playoffs.

In preseason, bench depth was the best weapon talked about when evaluating the Sounders 2011 roster.  It will be tested in the next two matches.  If Seattle wins one of the next two without taking on more injuries, they will be in good shape for the showdown with Cascadia Rival, Portland.

Heading to Washington DC, it is hard not to think on failing budget compromise, a struggling economy, and recent counter terrorism issues in Pakistan.  To paraphrase Sounders coach, Sigi Schmid, *I subscribe to the belief you only have so much energy to give.  With so much focused attention on the death of Osama Bin Laden, I propose a midweek break.  At 7:30 on the East coast and 4:30 on the West coast the Sounders FC face DC United.  It is important to spend two-thirds more energy on your passions and what you love.  Even laughter.  Osama Bin Lden and terrorism, not to dismiss the value and weight of recent events, are neither what I would consider topics of love, passion, or even laughter.  Consider turning to soccer for one night as the beautiful alternative.

Soccer is a simple game.  *If you put a ball at the feet of a 3-year-old child, perhaps even younger, that child will instinctively kick.  It’s simple, because it is from instinct.  Hours of repetition and the ball becomes an instinctive extension of body, mind, and soul.  * “While I cannot claim to be more than a passenger”.  Soccer is the beautiful, instinctual competitive spirit of the human kind and a recipe for peace.  Let’s enjoy the best of who we are rather than focus on the evils that have been defeated.

Never stare into the eyes of Medusa.  This weeks battle-classico features a growing cross continental rivalry.  If you haven’t turned on a Major League Soccer match recently.  It is time.  An intense but respectful rivalry is growing between DC and Seattle.  Turn your attention to Washington for the beautiful game.  It’s instinct really.  Focus more on what happens in soccer and terrorism will inevitably fade to black.

 A few notes and references

* Starting XI = Starting lineup.
* During Seattle’s inaugural season the team went through a long stretch of fouls.  Players were irritated with officials, but were also not helping themselves by adding complaints.  Sigi Schmid made the point, that he subscribes to the belief players only have so much energy to give each match.  Using it on officials is not the best use of that energy.  Since that time the Sounders have gone from the team receiving the highest number of fouls to middle of the league.
*Cliff McCrath, five time NCAA Division II Champions with Seattle Pacific University.  Also ran a summer boys and girls youth soccer camp on Whidbey Island.  I attended three years as a child.  His (almost) weekly soundersfc.com show “Nub’s Nuggets” is where he covers one relevant soccer point to think on each week.  During April, 2011 he covered the simplicity of teach kids to play.  By setting a ball in from of them they will instinctively kick.  Make fun games out of repetitive passing and ball control.  Then, sit back, and answer questions when they ask.  This is a grain of wisdom in why the game is so beautiful.

Sigi vs Sigi

2 05 2010

Round 7 vs Columbus Crew

Sounder 'til I die

The two-time defending Supporter Shield winners bring their top rated brand of MLS soccer to Seattle.  Holding onto the best record in the MLS the last two years means something special is going on in Columbus.  The something is really someone.  His name, Guillermo Barros Schelotto.  He’s probably the best complete player in MLS as well as biggest difference maker.  Columbus Crew’s march to become 2008 MLS Cup Champions was led by Seattle’s own Sigi Schmid, who considers Schelotto the most complete player he has coached.  So this Round 7 match vs Columbus is Sigi old vs Sigi new.

You can’t stop Guillermo Barros Schelotto.  The smart choice is to contain and limit his attack options.  Seattle’s defense is capable of that.  A fun match-up to watch is Frankie Hejduk vs Steve Zakuani.  It’s defense vs offense.  Hejduk, a former US National Team player goes forward often.  That could force Zakuani to play a deeper more defensive role.  If our midfield can control possession and tempo, that will limit Hejduk’s forward involvement and allow Zakuani to support Seattle offensive threats.  This becomes more important because of Schelotto.  If Schelotto has a full arsenal of weapons at his disposal he will hit you with something.  If you limit his artillery of surrounding teammates joining in attacks, then Sounders give themselves a chance.

America's Hardest Working Team

This should prove one of the more fun matches to watch.  Both teams build attacks and play to score.  Both are capable of sitting back and defending, but neither coach plays that style.  Both keepers will have to show up for work.  As for me, i recommend you forget records and enjoy two teams that bring the best brand of American style of soccer to MLS.  Both these American teams have been developed by one of the best American coaches, Sigi Schmid.

Post Match

Sounders FC 1 – Columbus Crew 1

Steve Zakuani burst out of the gate with Sounders FC’s fastest goal in minute 4.  The entire Sounders team seemed poised to join Zakuani, as practically every player set up or took a shot at Columbus goal.  Somehow, not even the kitchen sink found Columbus net.  So all it took Columbus was a momentary Sounders snooze during first half stoppage time that allowed an unmanned Steve Lenhart to head in a well placed cross from Danny O’Rourke off the left-wing.  Nothing  remarkable and easily defendable.  That brief lapse is all that is needed against the Sounders.  Until, the 2nd and 3rd goals become more frequent, that will continue to be all that other teams need.  Just that one blinking mistake.

Sounders looked more like a top rated soccer team.  Eventually they will act like one on the score sheet.  The results will come.  Many more draws will  become wins than losses for this club.  The result wasn’t there, but the game was more enjoyable than most in the league.  Bias?  Yes and no.  I am biased.  I have also watched a lot of other MLS.  There is a lot more midfield defense than there is midfield build up and attack. in MLS.  Many teams have gone with the trendy 4-5-1 formation this year.  Which in American soccer translates  to more guys in the middle available to transition to defense.  Colorado is using that formation well.  The sounders employed a 4-3-3.  What made this formation work for the Sounders was how it allowed them to switch between patiently building an attack with controlled passing, and firing the ball forward to chase down or create breakaways.  It kept Columbus on their heels.  You could tell they didn’t like it.  They aren’t used to playing that much defense.  But Columbus hung on.  The really good news for Sounders, if they play like that the rest of the season, they will only find 3 or 4 teams who will hang on like Columbus.  The Sounders test now is committing to that style.  It seems to me they found an attacking formation, that allowed them to keep their strong defensive shape and yet get forward quickly.  Sometimes even using the fullbacks to bring them forward.

Committing to the 4-3-3 may be a good way to assert a unique style compared to most American teams.  It breaks down to a 4-2-1-3.  From the start it shows the Sounders confidence in their back four.  It also means when the Sounders attackers get aligned on the same page, they will be taking turns assisting and scoring multiple goals per game.

With LA Galaxy on the immediate horizon, I feel a sense of confidence working its way into the club.  Just in time to give that undefeated club a knock back to reality.

Iron, Lion, Zion, Real Salt Lake

14 04 2010

Round 3 vs Real Salt Lake

Sounder 'til I die

Everything is a little irie these days in the high Wasatch Mountain air at Rio Tinto, the home field of the unexpected 2009 MLS Champions, Real Salt Lake. The Claret and Cobalt had a pomp and circumstance home opener.  Their 2009 MLS Championship banner unveiled and championship rings distributed.  Rio Tinto has indeed been a kind pitch to RSL serving up a 13, and now 14 game undefeated streak at home.  They have still never lost a home opener.  Barely!

“Iron, Lion, Zion” the Bob Marley song, is joyously chanted after every RSL home victory.  Against the Sounders, the undefeated home opening streak, and high irie air looked to be left unfilled of Marley’s song.  After a full 90 minutes with Seattle leading 2-1, the 2009 MLS Champs home opening win streak, and 13 home match undefeated streak all looked lost.  Faced with the reality of no crowd pleasing Marley ditty, a sad eyed look crept over Leo the Lion’s face (the RSL mascot).  The side ref held up the stoppage time sign with 4 minutes.  A little more than usual for an MLS match, but not unusual, and this is Real Salt Lake where they are the champs.  So why argue, right?  On the footballing Isle of Britain, where Sir Alex Ferguson decrees stoppage time at Manchester United matches, 4 minutes would be considered a shame, despicable, a real insult to the fans and to the game.  Visitors coming to Old Trafford, Manchester United’s home pitch, believe Sir Alex has so much pull that eventually the stoppage time sign held up by the side ref will read “until we score”.  But this is the kinder, gentler MLS, so 4 minutes is kind.  Irie and kind.

For 90 minutes Sounders FC frustrated RSL.  Even being outplayed in stretches, the Sounders showed they were resilient and would endure the champs.  Four added minutes seemed a short exhale to relief.  Three and a half of those four zipped by.  There would be one last corner for Real Salt Lake.  No panic in Seattle, because after the corner, Keller boots the ball down field followed by the refs end of game bright whistle tweets.  Then, Rave Green joy celebrated on the champs home pitch.  Who would question this calculation of confidence?  Because in soccer there is no “buzzer beater”.  No ‘hale Mary” pass.  There is also no US sports team as high and irie in altitude and attitude as this Real Salt Lake team.  The talented, but undisciplined step cousin of Real Madrid.  You know the one I mean.  The cousin with the window open every time you step in his room.  Even in winter.  The one that says to you “dude chill” and “check this out”, more than you are comfortable with.  The one who never studies but passes everything with flying colors and says “dude you just got’ta put yer antenna’s out there, and stuff, all kinds of crazy great stuff will come to you man”  You know the type right?  OK, OK, OK, maybe that’s personal, but you still like, totally know what I mean, right?  Excuse me for a moment, pffffft, pffffft, pffffft, . . . heh . . . eh-heh . .. … .. . ….. .eh-heh eh-heh, ahhh yah !!!

The 94th minute came.  A corner to Real Salt Lake.  Their man from Argentina, Nelson Gonzalez goes to Seattle’s right corner.  He fires a cross into the box, hitting a ball swinging slightly away from goal that finds his Costa Rican teammate, Alvaro Saborio, who jumps into action and cracks a header from the center of the box past Keller, and into the left corner of Seattle’s goal.  End of game.

They “gon’na be Iron, like a Lion in Zion”.  Wait, wait, wait, hold the music.  This is a 2-2 draw, so why are they singing?  Are there no rules in Salt Lake?  They celebrate everything that is good and beautiful about soccer and no one is telling them to come back to reality.  This was a buzzer beater plus hale Mary corner from a Real Salt Lake team so Irie, it doesn’t know it can not do what it is actually doing.  This team keeps saying “dude check this out”.  They won a championship winning only 11 games and lost 12.  Yes, lost more than they won.  A Western Conference team that barely made the playoffs.  They were outcasts in the bizarre MLS Playoff alignment, which placed them into the Eastern Conference.  Their first round foe, the 2008 champs, Columbus Crew.  Somehow they got past Columbus, and the Chicago and won the Eastern Conference trophy.  Are you a little buzzed yet?  Yes.  You heard me right.  You are reading me correctly.  Real Salt Lake, a Western Conference team is the reigning Eastern Conference champion.  It is certain they will never defend this title.  They went on to the MLS final against Landon Donovan and Beckham, and eventually won in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes of soccer drawn at 1-1.

I am a Sounders fan, Rave Green to the core, but hey, let them sing in Salt Lake.  Any team that can invent a last second game winner in soccer when there is no such thing.  Especially when the outcome is a 2-2 draw and not even a win.  That high mountain creativity deserves victorious celebration.  So yes, this dude abides, for Real Salt Lake.  I say let them be “Iron like a Lion in Zion”!
